Having finally embraced their inner cringe, the Smith family are free, and Rick instantly assures Jerry that he would trade him in a heartbeat, attempting to backtrack on his declaration of affection. Being earnest and enthusiastic might be lame - but it's not as lame as performative cynicism.
Summer and Morty have reached a similar conclusion, having finally realized that Bruce’s unimpressed posing is cringe, and so are they for buying the act. It’s another humbling moment for Rick (after the Space Beth fiasco, the smartest man in the universe just can’t catch a break), and Rick even admits to feeling some kind of love for Jerry, as part of his escape plan - a new low. If anything, he’s more so, seeing as Jerry is far more comfortable with his own emotions than Rick ever could be. Hence, Rick realizes that by spending his days trying to be cool, trying not to care about others, he’s squared the circle, and become just as cringe as Jerry.
But Rick is due for a deeply uncomfortable realization, as the demons inform Rick that Jerry’s cringe needs Rick’s “too-cool-to-care-attitude” to truly elevate into peak cringe. It all turns into a bloodbath the moment Jerry catches on, and Beth and Rick soon have to descend into Hell to rescue him, donning fetish gear to blend in with the crowd. Despite her initial defiance, Beth quickly gets drunk and joins in the humiliation, poking fun at Jerry’s almost inhuman earnestness and naivety (despite being incredibly irritating, Jerry is far too pure-hearted for this family). Rick, who is somehow staying sober in a bar, is tracked down by Beth, who quickly realizes that Jerry isn’t in on the joke.
In fact Rick’s car was the one who really introduced Summer to Rick’s mind-melting reality, in her bid to “keep Summer safe.” And once again, the car proves capable of sociopathic solutions, puppeteering a body to help the kids escape. Of course, it’s too much for Bruce, who might be the most composed kid in high school, but hasn’t yet had his soul broken by the horrors of the multiverse, in the way that Summer and Morty have.
